The Republican National Convention paid tribute last night to Michael Monsoor, the Coronado-based Navy SEAL who was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor in April by President Bush for selfless heroism in Iraq.
After a video tribute to Monsoor, the Republican delegates gave him a lengthy standing ovation.
Monsoor's sister, Sara, was on hand at the second day of the Republican convention in St. Paul, Minn.
“We honor your brother, and the sacrifice of you and your family,” said Orson Swindle, a former Marine who was incarcerated at the infamous “Hanoi Hilton” during the Vietnam war with Sen. John McCain of Arizona, who will formally claim the Republican presidential nomination tomorrow.
Swindle introduced six living Medal of Honor winners and a group of two dozen former Vietnam POWs who were in captivity with him and McCain.
Petty Officer 2nd Class Monsoor died in Ramadi in 2006 at 25 years old after throwing himself on a live grenade.
His action saved three fellow SEALs and several Iraqi soldiers.
Another San Diegan was prominently featured at last night's proceedings.
Miles McPherson, the former Charger who is now pastor of Rock Church in San Diego, delivered the invocation.
